Creating Confident and Dignified Young Women

Every day, young women across the globe are abused both physically and mentally.  This endless cycle of abuse must come to an end, and I can use the principles I have learned through Martial Arts to do just that.  Martial Arts has taught me to be a confident person from the inside, and to make good choices that can ultimately positively impact my life.  Many young women have never learned the importance of self confidence, and therefore can be easily manipulated and controlled.  My plan is to spread awareness that self confidence and dignity are imperative to make choices that can ultimately better the lives of young women.

When I was ten years old, my best friend Maggie's sister, Katie Brown, was brutally murdered by her boyfriend at the age of twenty.  Being so close to the Brown Family, I could not begin to understand why a man would ever do that, why Katie was gone, or why this would happen to such a loving and innocent person.  For the last seven years whenever I think of Katie, I am deeply disturbed, and I feel that becoming Miss Rhode Island's Outstanding Teen can enable me to help save other young women from Katie's terrible fate.

The ability to say "No" is possibly the strongest asset a teen girl can have.  Who ever knew that one word could be so strong?  If every young woman had the ability to say "No" in harmful situations whether it would be with friends or with boyfriends, abuse and manipulation in theory would not exist.

My plan of action is to assist in the Katie Brown Educational Program, which goes to multiple schools to perform demonstrations and role playing activities while teaching the importance of confidence, and the warning signs of domestic violence.  I want to become a real role model while helping teen girls all across the nation to find self-confidence and be able to say "No" to potentially dangerous peer pressure.  My goal is to ultimately help to take the program nation wide, to be a strong voice and help wherever I am needed to assist in ending this cycle of manipulation and abuse.

The murder of Katie hit me so deeply that I knew I needed to help as much as I could to change the future for the young women of today.  I do not want to be Miss America's Outstanding Teen for the glamour or the glitz, I want to hold the title so I can truly make a difference in young woman's lives by helping them to discover their own confidence and dignity to make positive and life changing decisions.
